sniffling through day 3

And by “sniffling,” I don’t mean crying.  Unfortunately, I’m pretty sick right now, which does not bode well for me considering I have a weekend trip (which involves a lot of walking around and being outside) that I committed to.  Hopefully, I’ll feel much better by Saturday morning.

Now we move onto day three: Genesis 11-14

-the Tower of Babel
-introduction of Abram (later Abraham)

So, I got to thinking, as cool as different languages are, how much cooler would it be if we all spoke one language?  In one of my classes today, the professor talked about Adamic theories of language.  One of the first things Adam did once he was created was to name everything around him.  This signifies that all things had an essence that was linked to language.  Once Adam and Eve fell, all this was sort of put out of balance.  Still, before the Babel sequence, people were speaking Adam’s language.  If people weren’t so foolish to try and build a tower to Heaven, we may be speaking Adam’s language today!  But then, people always have been and will be foolish, so maybe at some other point in history, God would have pulled the confusion of tongues on us.

As for Abram (not yet Abraham), it always kind of bothered me that he would ask his wife (and half-sister) Sarai to tell kings (in chapter 12, it’s Pharaoh, and later on Abimelech) that she was his sister instead of wife in order to save his own life.  I mean, it wasn’t a lie, it wasn’t exactly the truth, either.  Well, I have the life application Bible which explained how Abram was acting out of fear, and his intent was to deceive the Egyptians.  As a result, Abram’s problems multiplied, which shows how lying compounds the effects of sin.

Despite all this, you can see how much God loves and favors Abram because even though his problems did multiply, He really showered so many blessings on him.  Which reinforces the fact that despite hardships and struggles, it’s always better on God’s side.
